While reading through the Carnegie Hero Fund’s latest award announcements, I came across the story of Roland V. Hueston III. Roland, 36, attempted to save a man who was brutally assaulted and thrown on the tracks, just hours after the new year started in 2022.

Oftentimes when I need to look away from the computer screen during work, I find myself reading through A New Century of Heroes, a book about the Carnegie Hero Fund’s history and stories of the heroes it seeks to honor. One of the stories that immediately jumped off the page to me is the story of Sanford Harling III.

A conversation that comes up often in the Hero Fund office are the stories of six Carnegie heroes who received the Carnegie Medal not once, but twice.
The Carnegie Medal honors heroic acts in which the rescuers take on extraordinary physical risk. These stories are often remarkable, but for the six double-recipients, they took on great risk a second time, despite all the trauma that can come out of a heroic act, is nothing short of incredible.

In my role at the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission, I am working on aspects of the HERO Project, which aims to harness the Hero Fund’s century worth of data to study altruism through an open-source data portal.
A major part of my job is to ensure the data remains humanized, ensuring these people’s stories are honored and respected, rather than just being a statistic.
