The Hub for AI and Data Science Leadership (HAIL) didn't start from nothing — Pitt already had cutting edge data and AI science work happening across schools and departments. What it lacked was a way to connect that work and make it visible.
Michael Colaresi, HAIL's Director and Strategic Advisor to the Provost, built HAIL to close that gap by pulling existing efforts into one hub, centered around the academic mission, so people can find each other, learn from each other, and act together instead of in parallel.
The goal of HAIL's work is agency, confidence, and accountability by giving learners, researchers, and practitioners what they need to lead thoughtfully in a world where AI is becoming embedded in process and practice. This happens through interdisciplinary collaboration and applied programs, that build leadership decision making skills.
HAIL operates with a vision is for a world where all teams align their use of AI and data science to their principles and a mission to inspire and partner with organizations to maximize responsible AI and data science-influenced practices.
HAIL's goals are threefold:
- Cultivating and Connecting the Ecosystem and Scaling Innovations:

- Establishing and Sharing Strategic Guidance for AI/DS Across the Academic Mission:

- Enacting Trustworthy, Real-World Solutions:

HAIL relies on four boards, each rooted in a different part of the ecosystem it serves: industry, academia, research, and students. The External Advisory Board keeps HAIL connected to industry, and to how AI actually gets used responsibly outside the University. The Academic Advisory Committee does the same work from the inside, making sure HAIL's programs hold up against what's really happening in classrooms The AI for Science Board gives researchers a direct way to flag concerns as they come up in the research environment. And this year, HAIL is launching a new Student Advisory Board Committee, giving students their own standing voice in shaping HAIL's work.
The work of RDS@Pitt (Responsible Data Science at the University of Pittsburgh) initiative laid the conceptual, operational, and cultural foundation for HAIL by proving the need for a unifying hub that moves beyond literacy toward cultivating agency, confidence, and accountability—positioning Pitt to lead in human-centered AI and data science leadership at scale.
