A Journey through Data Science Collaboration and Innovation

In the realm of academic data science, RDS@Pitt stands as a beacon of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

Born from the recommendations of the University of Pittsburgh's Data Science Task Force, RDS@Pitt has rapidly evolved to become a central hub for data science at the University.

This blog post delves into the history and development of RDS@Pitt, highlighting its key milestones and ongoing initiatives.

Provost's Charge to the Data Science Task Force

The Data Science Task Force, formed by Pitt’s provost in Fall 2019, was tasked with propelling the University's educational and research mission through data in all its forms. The task force aimed to create a coordinated strategy to equip students with necessary data skills, develop data science methods in research, and attract and retain faculty proficient in data methodologies.

Task Force Recommendations

To capitalize on this opportunity, the task force recommended a framework to coordinate and grow data science across campus into an institutional focal point. These recommendations included specific goals and actions to incrementally build toward this vision, emphasizing the importance of hiring a leader to guide these efforts.

Impact of the Year of Data and Society (YoDaS)

The 2021-2022 academic year marked a significant milestone with the Year of Data and Society (YoDaS), led by Nora Mattern, teaching assistant professor in the School of Computing and Information and director of the Sara Fine Institute.

This initiative revealed numerous groups across campus working on data science-related problems, often unaware of each other's existence. By investing in resources to bridge these gaps, YoDaS demonstrated the potential of coordinated efforts in creating interdisciplinary synergies.

Two crucial features emerged from YoDaS and were integrated into RDS@Pitt:

  • Identification and connection of diverse data science groups across campus.
  • Establishment of a polycentric organizational structure to foster interdisciplinary collaboration (Year of Data and Society).

The Genesis: Responsible Data Science@Pitt

The foundation of RDS@Pitt can be traced back to the efforts of the Data Science Task Force, co-chaired by School of Computing and Information Science Dean Bruce Childers and then Vice Provost Steve Wisniewski.

The Task Force's Final Report envisioned a "control tower" model to coordinate data science activities across the campus, harnessing existing energy without duplicating resources and services of individual schools and programs at Pitt.

Operating out of the Office of the Provost, RDS@Pitt collaborates closely with Pitt Research, ensuring a comprehensive University-wide approach to data science initiatives.

Looking Ahead

RDS@Pitt continues to evolve, guided by its mission to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in data science. By building on its foundational principles and expanding its network of communities and working groups, RDS@Pitt is poised to lead the charge in responsible, impactful data science both within the University of Pittsburgh and beyond.
