At the heart of the RDS@Pitt initiative lies a comprehensive and strategic organization that fosters responsible data science through collaboration, innovation, and interdisciplinary partnerships.
Here’s a closer look at how RDS@Pitt is structured to achieve its mission.
Communities of Practice
One of the standout features of RDS@Pitt is its Communities of Practice (CoPs). These are specialized groups—either thematic or infrastructure-based—that formalize and expand on existing interdisciplinary partnerships. By providing administrative support, resources, and visibility, RDS@Pitt ensures these communities can grow their impact and networks effectively.
The leaders of these Communities of Practice form one part of the vital Steering Committee that advises the Associate Vice Provost of Data Science. At Pitt, diverse teams are tackling societal challenges, from increasing technology access and addressing addiction at molecular and institutional levels to using data for sustainable future planning. These CoPs play a crucial role in driving forward-thinking solutions and fostering a collaborative environment that leverages multiple domains and disciplines in new and exciting ways.
Infrastructure Programs
Infrastructure programs, or Programs, play a pivotal role in creating a robust foundation that supports and intersects with the various Communities of Practice. These programs, including research, education, and responsibility, are designed to address and integrate essential infrastructure elements. The programs foster a cohesive and efficient environment that facilitates collaboration, innovation, and dissemination of knowledge by focusing on these cross-cutting infrastructure items. This integrative approach ensures that all community themes benefit from a consistent and reliable infrastructure, thereby enhancing the overall impact and sustainability of initiatives within the Communities of Practice.
Working Groups
In addition to CoPs and Programs, RDS@Pitt supports Working Groups. These groups serve as incubators for potential future Communities of Practice and provide a less formal avenue for faculty, staff, students, and professionals to start collaborating in responsible data science. Working Groups enhance the impact of data science at Pitt by addressing issues such as digital disinformation, automation challenges, and diversifying the curriculum to teach data science effectively.
Executive Committee and Advisory Board
To align efforts and innovations both internally and externally, RDS@Pitt relies on two essential components: the Executive Committee and the Advisory Board.
Executive Committee
This committee comprises leadership from the Office of the Provost and Pitt Research, ensuring synchronization with University-level priorities. It also advocates for responsible data science in meaningful policy discussions at the highest levels, reinforcing RDS@Pitt’s commitment to ethical and impactful data practices.
Advisory Board
Given RDS@Pitt’s focus on use-based, responsibly applied data science, partnerships with industry leaders, government, and the nonprofit sector are crucial. The Advisory Board is composed of influential figures from these sectors, providing strategic guidance and support. This diverse board helps RDS@Pitt stay connected to real-world applications and industry needs, ensuring that its initiatives are both relevant and impactful.
A Commitment to Responsible Data Science
The organization of RDS@Pitt reflects a deep commitment to fostering responsible data science. By leveraging the strengths of its Communities of Practice, Programs, Working Groups, Executive Committee, and Advisory Board, RDS@Pitt creates a dynamic environment where interdisciplinary collaboration thrives. This structure not only enhances the impact of data science at Pitt but also ensures that ethical considerations remain at the forefront of all initiatives.
We understand that data science thrives and improves lives not within a one-size-fits-all top-down silo, but through networking expertise in and beyond the data at every decision-point from design to communication. Therefore, our organizational structure balances coordination across the breadth of the University and community—through the Steering Committee, Executive Committee, and Advisory Board—with bottom-up independence in CoPs, Programs, and Working Groups.
RDS@Pitt is more than just an academic initiative; it’s a hub of polycentric innovation, collaboration, and discovery in the responsible uses of data science. As it continues to grow and evolve, RDS@Pitt stands as a model for how institutions can harness the power of data with critical thinking to address complex societal challenges responsibly and effectively—not by replacing disciplines and domains, but by identifying, connecting and investing in networks of diverse expertise that are only available at a world-class university such as Pitt.
